Universo PDA

A successful Spanish site selling PDAs, mobiles and their accessories, found it increasingly difficult to keep their static html site up-to-date. The project was to re-design the site architecture and implement a PHP / MySQL content management system which will power a new-look site.
While the new backend is now complete, the presentation layer is still a clone of the original site in tableless XHTML1.0 / CSS and conforms to WAI Level AAA.

>The original Universo PDA home page was recreated in tableless, semanitic, XHTML and CSS with modern DOM Javascript functionality.

Despite the original designer's heavy use of images and image maps, the page now conforms to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines, Level 3.

As part of the redesign of the site's information architecture, the content was divided into three virtual directories: PDA's, Accessories and Information.

What really differentiates Universo PDA from its competition is the wide range of accessories it can supply for almost any model on the market.

However, finding that particular accessory on the site was not always easy and so it was decided to offer the user as many routes as possible. In addition to the search function, an accessory may be found by the model of PDA or phone, or by (sub-)category.

This screenshot shows the simplified structure of the accessories index, and the contextual navigation bar. Between them they ensure that an item may be found within three "clicks" of the front page.

For reasons of both branding and control, the external search service of the original site was replaced by an internal search engine which ranks results by relevance.

The content management system, originally based on tutorials at Sitepoint.com, has been developed and extended over the last five years to meet a number of client requirements.

The screenshot shows the index of makes of PDAs with details of the last update. Since search engines prefer fresh content, the colour warnings are configurable to remind the content producer to check and update pages regularly.
